Morning Oppo,

I’ve been casually looking for a new (to me) car for about a month and test drove a few different cars. I was looking mostly for a focus or fiesta hatchback in a manual. Would have loved a tdi golf or sportwagen but they’re not allowed to sell them yet so I’ve moved on from them.

I did drive a CR-V that I ended up liking a lot more than I thought I would, but it wasn’t quite right for me.

So I signed the paperwork for a 2012 Focus SE in ‘race red’ (I shit you not, that’s the listed color) with ~64k miles and a 5spd. Otherwise base with steel wheels and no options.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s not perfect, some scratches, chips and some damage to the rear bumper cover.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

It had also been on their lot a while so I was able to talk them down a good deal. It proved more difficult than I thought to find a base model stick hatchback. Half of the dealers I stopped at didn’t have a single manual on the lot!

Well anyway it’s mine. I’ll finish up the paperwork today or tomorrow and take it home this weekend.

The one main issue is a fairly heavy cigarette smoke smell in the car. I used to work for a company that did fire restoration so I had access to an ozone machine and some amazing chemicals. Everyone I knew has left there though. Any tips from the oppo community on removing a smoke smell from a used car I can do with chemicals I don’t have to have a license to purchase?

No, my wife has asthma and while she won’t be riding in it very often I need to remove the smoke, not just cover it up.

That did make me laugh though...

Odour bombs can be had from. Good detailing outlet you can find on autogeek. You’ll need to wipe down the surfaces and clean the glass but it doesn’t take long. Most is having the car air con on with the ignition on for a while.

that color looks like ruby red to me. race red is a flat bright red like lipstick. yours is darker and I think metallic. enjoy the ride!

Yeah, it wasn’t a ford dealer so they may have listed it wrong. It’s a few shades darker than fire engine red, which is good because my wife says I can’t pull off a bright red car ;)

Yeah, I’m planning on changing the cabin air filter, wiping down everything, shampooing the carpet and headliner and was thinking of trying a bomb.

It had been on the lot for nearly two months so I imagine it was worse having been closed up on a black asphalt lot through a couple hot months.

Just noticed the product is Car-Freshner. Not Freshener....Freshner. I’d imagine the cabin filter and all the HVAC stuff would need some thorough cleaning followed up with a regular interior detail and a lot of fresh air exposure.

Yeah, that’s all in my plan. I’ve already ordered some activated carbon which is fantastic at absorbing odors as well.

I really like the styling of that model run of focus’s. Had one as a rental car for a couple of weeks and acutlly liked it quite a bit. The only thing I wish it had was a bigger trunk. For a hatch, the trunk is amazingly small.

Good choice For the car.

I found that getting rid of the smoke smell without any professional Chemicals in a car is about thinking about everything that the smoke touched (under seats, headliner, panels near passengers feet, etc). I bought a car from a previous smoker and I did a standard wipe down of the seats and dash, and vacuumed and resolved the carpets that I could see; and it seemed 80% better for about a week. The second time, I did everything I did the first time, but also made sure to resolve under the seats, wipe everything, vacuum nooks and crannies, and even did a very light steam with a microfiber towel on the headliner. This time it seemed a lot better and stayed that way.

All of that said, I've heard ozone is very very effective.

Yeah, I think you’ll be fine with all that. I like using Ozium as well.

The hatch is physically shorter than the sedan, you can fold forward the rear seats and now you have a huge storage space though!

I’ve liked this body style since it came out. I had a first Gen zx3 and loved thay car. I gave it to my younger brother when he desperately needed a car, he bitched nonstop about it, then totaled it 6 weeks after he got it. I’ve never forgiven him and been looking for its replacement for a while. This car is not quite as nimble, but will do nicely and act as a good reliable commuter while I bang on a garage of 35+ year old bikes and cars for “fun”.

That’s what I thought on the trunk size. I have a mazda 3 sedan and the trunk is huge. Then I can fold the seats down for a pass through and get a large bicycle in there and only have to remove the front wheel.

Yeah, ozone is ridiculously effective! You have to have an EPA and OSHA permit for an ozone machine though (they’re also very expensive).

It’s such a cheater way to do it. Close up the car with a small ozone generator in it, let it fill up and sit for a few hours. Then all previous smells are gone and the ozone smell dissappear after about a day.

For reference on hatch vs sedan, in my old zx3, which was two door and a touch smaller than the current fiesta I was able to fit an 8 ft folding table, 22 folding chairs, and a 26" bike with both wheels on (all separate occasions). I almost never have someone in the back seat so passenger plus cargo isn’t a need for me.

I also have 2 giant dogs (a newfoundland and a st bernard) so they don’t fit in the back seat of a sedan, but they do with the seats folded down in a hatch.

The local major brand car rental location mentioned that they use an ozone machine to rehab cars people smoke in. I wonder if you could pay such an outfit for the service? Or maybe an autobody shop.

Is it a 1.0?

On my mothers 1.0 the exhaust pipe is on the other side.. Does anyone have any idea why?

No this one is the 2.0 naturally aspirated duratec.

The 1.0 would have been fun, but I couldn’t find a single used one with a manual in the greater st louis area.
